How method marks work in IGCSE Maths
Many multi-mark questions separate a valid method from accuracy and completion. The exact codes and dependencies belong to the relevant official mark scheme, but the review principle is consistent: visible evidence matters.
Method, accuracy and dependency
A method mark commonly recognises a valid process; an accuracy mark recognises a correct result that may depend on that process. A later step may sometimes follow through from an earlier error when the scheme permits it.
What to look for
- A correct formula or relationship
- A valid substitution
- A logically equivalent algebraic transformation
- Enough working to distinguish method from a guess
Avoid over-awarding
Do not infer invisible working. A correct answer may receive full credit where the scheme allows it, but a wrong answer with no working cannot be given an invented method.
