Mark scheme guide

How to use a mark scheme without giving false marks

A mark scheme is a professional marking document, not merely an answer list. Read its notation and question-specific instructions before awarding credit.

Keep the script visible

Compare each marking point with evidence on the page. Do not let the expected answer cause you to read a faint or ambiguous symbol as something it may not be.

Respect dependencies

  • Check whether an accuracy mark depends on a method mark.
  • Apply follow-through only where permitted.
  • Look for alternative methods and equivalent forms.
  • Read notes on units, rounding and answer-only responses.

Escalate uncertainty

If the scheme does not clearly cover a valid-looking method, record it for qualified review instead of forcing it into the closest listed route.
