Understanding the 4MA1 paper identity

A paper identity is a combination of fields, not just a year. Two documents labelled Mathematics A may belong to different tiers or regional variants. Use the full identity to select both the question paper and its corresponding marking material.

Paper number and tier

The qualification prefix is 4MA1. A code ending 1H identifies Paper 1 Higher; 2F identifies Paper 2 Foundation. If a regional R suffix is present, preserve it when finding the matching resources. Do not substitute another paper simply because its year and topic coverage look similar.

Record these fields before starting

  • Qualification: Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A, linear 4MA1.
  • Paper: the complete code from the document cover.
  • Tier: Foundation or Higher.
  • Session and year: exactly as printed on the document.
  • Resources: matching question paper and marking material from an authorised source.

Catalogue coverage and readiness

Maiths lists catalogue identities on its supported-papers page. The signed-in selector checks current resource readiness. This guide does not promise that every historical paper is available inside the editor and does not distribute exam-board PDFs.
